Wakesurf Board Reviews

To help you get started, we have put together a list of the top 10 wakesurf boards based on user reviews in the market today.

1. Driftsun Throwdown Wakesurf Board

Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Style : Surf Style with 4 fin setup

Length: 4′ 6″ & 4′ 8″

Price Range: $374.99 to $384.99

Our take

The Dritsun Throwdown is a really cool board from a company that is coming up in the wakesurf board build business. It boasts a weight capacity up to 200lbs and offers a quad find setup that makes carving up those waves a breeze. With good buoyancy you get a lot of pop when working on ollie type tricks. A really good surf style board.

Pros
  • Great value for the price
  • It is very easy to ride and has a good amount of speed
  • Very durable and can handle a lot of daily use without showing signs of wear
Cons
  • The board is a bit on the short side, so it may be challenging for some riders to stay on their feet at higher speeds.

The Verdict:

This is a great beginner-intermediate level board that is easy to ride and very affordable. It comes in four different sizes, so you can find the perfect fit for your height.

2. Airhead BONZAI Wakesurfer

Experience Level: Beginner to Advanced

Style : Hybrid

Dimensions: 63″x20.5″

Price Range: Under $300

Our take

The Airhead Bonzai is another really cool board from a slightly obscure manufacturer, however, the design and finish of this board is really cool. With the wood grain top matched to the grey and white pads, it makes for a beautiful board.

At 63″ it’s also one of the longer boards on this list. The length helps beginners with stability and bouyancy, but also is a fun challenge for advanced riders to work on long board tricks.

It has a 3 fin setup, but you can quickly remove fins to create a totally new feel to the board. With 3 fins it’s stable in the water and carve-able. Reduce it to one center fin and the thing gets all kind of slippery which makes for fun slide, spin, and skim-style tricks. You can’t go wrong with this one….especially for the price!

Pros
  • This is a great all-around board for those looking to progress their skills
  • Stable and fast with a nice soft flex that makes it easy to ride
  • Inexpensive…especially for what you get with this board
Cons
  • Many complain that the board does not come with fins in the package. Research that completely from your retailer before you buy!
  • Not a super well known brand so it could be harder to sell if you want to move on from it some day

The Verdict:

This is a great option for any variety of skilled riders who are looking for a durable board that can handle large waves. It’s design is beautiful and the ride is really fun.

3. Ronix Koal Classic Fish Wakesurf Board

Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Style : Surf

Dimensions: 4’6”& 5’ & 5’6”

Price Range: Under $700

Our Take

We couldn’t have a list of the best wakesurf boards without including the Ronix Koal Classic Fish. This board is a staple in the wakesurf community and ridden by loads of pro riders. It’s classic surfboard design with split tail tells you all you need to know. This board is ready to surf!

It’s light weight and boasts a 3 fin setup for stability and total carve. Jumps, air tricks, and long surf rides are a breeze with this beautiful board.

You can’t go wrong with the quality of the Ronix build. This surfboard is durable and backed by the Ronix seal of quality. A must-have for any surf setup.

Pros
  • Available in 3 sizing options to suit the needs of a variety of riders
  • The buoyancy of this board makes it stable and usable for riders of all skill levels
  • Classic surf design for carve, air, and surf simplicity
  • Good resale value with the Ronix brand
Cons
  • Slightly more expensive than others on this list because of the Ronix brand
  • Really works only as a surf-style board. Not a hybrid, so some can see that as a drawback versus a more flexible design.

The Verdict:

With its beautiful design, the Koal Classic Fish is one of the most versatile boards in the market. It is forgiving to new riders but still has plenty of pop and flair for advanced surfers. It definitely has a beautiful fit and finish.

4. Driftsun Fifty50 Wakesurf Board

Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Style : Skim

Dimensions: 4ft 9”

Price Range: Under $400

Our Take

Let’s just take a moment and admire how beautiful this board is. The designers at Driftsun got this one right. A simple, classic design, with a sleek color scheme. This one is ready to surf, or just put it on your rack for decoration 🙂

The Fifty/50 is a skim style board that offers a 3 small fin setup. It’s very slippery with a small’ish size and light weight profile. The fins can be quickly customized to fit any riding level and make the coveted 360 spin a reality!

Crafted with quality but will at a very good price. The Fifty/50 is definitely top of our list.

Pros
  • Small but stable design and easy to use board for a variety of skill levels
  • Beginners can use this board with ease even on their very first time wakesurfing
  • It can also be used for spins, jumps, and shove-its for experienced riders.
  • At current pricing levels, this board is a no-brainer!
Cons
  • It’s a little heavier than other boards in its class. That helps with stability, but makes more advanced tricks a bit more difficult

The Verdict:

Based on our experience, Driftsun Fifty50 Wakesurf Board provides excellent quality and beautiful craftsmanship. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned rider, this board can be a load of fun!

5. Driftsun Throwdown T2 Wakesurf Board

Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Style : Surf

Length: 4′ 6″ to 4′ 8″

Price Range: Under $400

Our Take

The second board on our list of the best wake surf boards from Driftsun is the Throwdown T2. A surf style board with all kinds of attitude! This board has a traditional 4 fin surf setup with large deep fins for all your surf-style needs.

It’s a foam core board which means it’s very buoyant and super forgiving as you work on those next big surf tricks. It’s a really easy board to get started with but still keeps advanced riders interested. Coming in under $400, this board is a great value to add to your collection

Pros
  • The T2 is the upgraded version of the original Throwdown
  • The board is just as easy to learn on, but has much more speed
  • The added fins help with tracking and better performance
  • Foam core adds buoyancy and forgiveness
  • Inexpensive
Cons
  • We haven’t had any issues with this, but some online communities complain a bit about the quality and durability of the board.

The Verdict:

This is a great option for beginners who want something a bit more stable and fun to ride in rougher waters. The board comes in four different sizes and has upgraded fins to help with tracking. A definite winner in our book!

6. Hyperlite Broadcast LTD Wakesurfer

Experience Level: Advanced

Style : Hybrid

Length: 5′ 0″ / 57″/ 5′ 3″ / 60″

Price Range: Under $500

Our Take

If you have been around the wakesurf community for any amount of time, you know the designs of Scott Bouchard and likely have ridden a Hyperlite Broadcast. The Broadcast is an absolute staple for any beginner surfer.

It’s stable and forgiving and with the right wave push, really fun to learn on. Hyperlight makes them in a variety of colors and even tweaks the shape slightly from model to model. It’s inexpensive and simply a great board from a great company with a great designer…that’s a lot of greatness!

My mother-in-law (who is over 60) road this board with us this morning. The broadcast is simply the best for new riders of any age!

Pros
  • Large surface area and is super thick for improved buoyancy
  • One of the most durable boards on the market
  • The soft flex core makes it easy to ride no matter what size you choose, all while allowing for more speed and stability
  • Comes in four different color schemes to fit your style (Red/Black, Blue/White, Black/Blue, and White/Black).
  • Budget friendly under $400 at many retail outlets
Cons
  • Some of the offers on Amazon do not come with fins.

The Verdict:

This is an excellent option for beginner riders who are looking for a durable board that can offer a really easy learning experience.

7. Airhead Lake Effect Wakesurf Board

Experience Level: Beginner to Advanced

Style : Skim

Dimensions: 56” x 21.5”

Price Range: Under $400

Our Take

Our second entry from Airhead is the Lake Effect skim-style surfboard. This board is really unique. It is super flat and offers hardly any rocker (board curl) at all. The flatness gives maximum water contact so it makes spin tricks so much more simple. It feels like this board could spin for days.

The Lake Effect is really light and rivals construction with other really high end boards, but still keeps a price tag under $400. It has a full grip pad which makes any kind of kick tricks better.

For the money, it’s hard to beat this board in the world of skim-style surfing.

Pros:

Pros
  • With minimal rocker and a flat base, this board provides a stable ride and is ideal for skim style tricks
  • The board is also thin and lightweight so it’s easy to carry and store
  • Removable fin setup
  • Almost a full grip pad
  • Inexpensive for what you get
Cons
  • Some report that the boards get damaged in shipping often
  • Not as easy to learn if you are a beginner

The Verdict:

If you’re into speed and spins, this board is for you. It is both incredibly fast, stable, and also maneuverable and forgiving. The small steering fins are enough for control while still having so much capability to spin, flip, or kick it anywhere you want to go.

8. Phase 5 Matrix

Experience Level: Intermediate

Style : Skim

Length: 51”

Price Range: Under $1,000

Our Take

Let’s face it, Phase 5 makes probably the best surf boards in the industry. Their light weight designs and construction material tend to be our favorites. The boards are beautiful, fast, and very flexible.

With more of a advanced rider flair, the Matrix is a Phase 5 masterpiece. So many pro riders choose the matrix for its versatility, weight, and performance. We have had a Matrix for many years now and it is still one of our favorites.

A single fin setup makes the board carve well, but is easily disengaged on the wave to create spin and trick velocity. If you can afford it, you will never go wrong with the Phase 5 Matrix.

Pros
  • Light weight design for easy advanced tricks
  • Phase 5 durability and construction
  • Best in class speed and skim style performance
Cons
  • Price, price, price

The Verdict:

If I had the money to spend and could select any board on the market, it would be the phase 5 Matrix. We made that purchase years ago and it has paid for itself many times over. Our intermediate riders love the challenge of the Matrix (sound very Keanu Reeves), and our more seasoned riders love the performance. An absolute must-have.

9. Ronix Women’s Carbon Air Core 3

Experience Level: Intermediate

Style : Skim

Length: 4ft 4”

Price Range: Under $1,000

Our Take

One of our female team riders said we couldn’t complete this list without mentioning her favorite board, the Ronix Carbon Air Core 3. While the name is long…the board is not! This skim style board is small and light. A perfect combo for our petite female riders. It’s the Ronix best seller for a reason.

It’s buoyancy is strong with a more rounded edge than some of the other skim style boards we have on this list. That makes the board really stable and more forgiving as intermediate and experienced riders continue to improve.

It’s a beautiful design with a durable construction. A great board…and yes Megan…it made the list!

Pros
  • A Ronix best seller for a reason
  • Beautiful design
  • Fit and finish tailored specifically to lighter women
  • A lightweight foam that makes the board super light
Cons
  • While it’s a top seller, it is expensive. Get your wallet out because that special female in your life deserves it!

The Verdict:

For our lighter female riders, this board should be pretty much top of the list. It’s light weight, but still really fast. It’s versatile, but also specialized to do anything the advanced rider can handle. A great all around board.

10. 2022 Connelly AK Wakesurf Board

Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Style : Surf

Length: 4′ 6″ / 4′ 10″

Price Range: Under $1,000

Our Take

The AK is our first board on this list from the original gangster company Connelly. This board is really cool. It’s lightweight and maneuverable. It’s fin setup keeps you stable and allows for a ton of carve.

It’s got a cool design in either red or blue clouds. It’s traction pad is unique and isn’t your traditional matting. We found that it holds your foot well though and really offers a lot of kick.

The AK is a really fun board that is a nice addition to any boat rack.

Pros
  • Claimes to be the fastest, most responsive wake surfing board you can buy
  • A narrow profile and full length center concave which provides an ultra responsive ride both up or down waves
  • It has an ultra responsive profile combined with a mellow rocker line and long tail – making it one awesome wakeboard.
Cons
  • Connelly did us no favors on price here. Some would say you could get more board for your money with other manufacturers

The Verdict:

This is a great all around and good-looking board that is perfect for beginners and intermediate riders. It is durable, easy to ride, and comes with removable fins to customize your experience.
